Trump wants to privatize USPS

We can not trust usps for anything here, it takes weeks to send and receive mail locally. They stole our Christmas presents this year, they actually showed us photos of our boxes in my local post office and said they don’t know what happened to them

One of the workers' kids had a very good Christmas.

Jokes aside, having a good state owned postal service is one of the most underappreciated things first world nations have.

Where?

I live in Ohio and USPS is pretty good. Local mail is consistently delivered within two days. I send letters and packages almost every day and have never had anything stolen and rarely damaged.

I think a Post Office is one of those things it make sense for a government to do and it has traditionally been a government role, and yet we live in an era where several private companies do seem to outperform the USPS. Why pay the gummint to do a job others do at least as well and more efficiently?
I live in ND and the postal service is horrible. If I want to send a letter or package to the next town over, about 20 miles, it has to go halfway across the state and back. So instead of going 20 miles, it goes 300+ and takes a week.
But UPS has no problems delivering my Amazon packages in the 2 day window.

Good!
The post office operates worse than the DMV.
It's about time someone woke up the zombies working there.

BS, the USPS is miles better than their private alternatives. It's cheaper, compensates their employees WAY better, and generally has better employees for it.

UPS and FEDEX workers are the worst! they treat your packages like crap, and don't care because they see the job as just temporary. USPS workers are usually in it for life and have far more respect for their job and their customers.

And it costs 50 cents to send that letter.

How much would you pay for shipping UPS or Fedex without Amazon prime?

Who needs an entire government expense which can be readily replaced? Are we just going to collect tax revenue and give it to people doing jobs we don’t need?

Why non modernize it?

I liked Bernie and Warren's idea of using post office locations as a check cashing service. 1$ to open an account to cash checks.

There are millions of people giving 5$ of their limited paycheck to cash their check every payday, where they can make predatory payday loans, because they don't have a bank account.

From the article:
The proposal is unlikely to gain any traction in Congress, which is currently working through its own reform packages to help the cash-strapped agency. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have spoken to the importance of preserving a federal mailing system to ensure delivery to all Americans, even to areas that the private sector has decided is not profitable to service. Members of Congress representing rural areas have particularly pushed not just the preservation of the Postal Service but an expansion of its offerings.

This makes it sound like privatization is either unlikely or will look a lot different than what people are envisioning.

That’s quite a monumental waste. Walmart and other cash your check for five bucks of store credit.

Typical. The usual people that bitch about government efficiency now have a problem with an idea because Trump proposed it.

USPS has 11 straight years of financial loss - last year alone to the tune of nearly 3 billion. The "its 2018" argument holds water here as there are better options, either they need to drastically overhaul it to patch up its severe leaks or cut it loose.

3 billion dollars, or 3% of 1 F-35.

I'd imagine that delivering daily mail isn't a profitable business model. That's why UPS and Fedex don't do it. So if you privatize the USPS how do you deal with that? You can jack up the price of other services like crazy but that's gonna piss a lot of people off.

In 2017 the USPS delivered 150 billion pieces of mail.

I think that’s pretty Fucking impressive.

It’s also not meant to turn a profit.

Well the 3 billion loss was a good year for them, the previous was near 6. And if the USPS is promising to increase digital presences, that is also going to come with job reduction.

I mean, steam engine operator and horse and buggy driver were good jobs too, but eventually you have to cut out dead waste -- or at least stop its bleeding.

and sure, start a separate thread for military spending if you want .. this is about USPS and how to stop its bleeding.

Look, you know I am no fan of Israel right, but do you ever hear me bitching about the aid to Israel?

Nope, and that is because in the scheme of spending, it is the definition of negligible.

The same is true here.

I've got nothing but good things to say about USPS. Been an avid mailorder customer for decades. Ran a mailorder for years. They provide a dependable service for a good price. I'd hate to see it privatized and consider mail delivery a valid role of government.

Not really the same here; you're a labour guy, right -- USPS has defaulted 5 years in a row to prepayments on pension and health plans to retirees

Postal Service says $6.9B default likely for pensions

So either you pass legislation allowing them to charge way more for their service or you just bail them out every year until people realize you don't need them. But, then you'll have to do that for coal workers, key chain makers, elevator operators, block buster, etc.

Someone should post comparisons of workers between UPS and USPS
