UFC/MMA hype is gone

So the UFC lost its appeal because fighters lost to other fighters? “Exposed” lol are you new to this sport? There’s a winner and a loser to every fight

tell me... if khabib lost to ANY fighter and had a 1 loss on his record, would he still be hyped by people as he is today?

no, he would not be as hyped.

losing is inevitable in sport. you are right there is a winner and loser every time.

but when someone with a 10+ winning streak loses, their hype dies

There really is a lack of fighters that bring that "larger than life" feeling that Anderson, GSP, Jon Jones etc. evoked around the 2010's, that is an undeniable fact (or Chuck, Fedor, Crocop etc. before). Khabib would have 100% been a perfect example, but now with his retirement there is not that much left. Being mostly undefeated is also only a part of the whole, it's also about how fights are won and what fighters represent on a personal level (Jon Jones back then was regarded quite differently, before all the other stuff happened). And in that regard the Sean O'Malleys just don't bring a lot to the table, and Islam, Shavkat etc. are a bit bland (not so much to me, as I enjoy their fights regardless, but the general public needs more of an "It" factor to get emotionally involved). The current lame attempts at trash talking also don't hold a candle to the Chael era.

Everyone loses brah... Unless you are Jon Jones or Khabib fighting in the same division his whole career.

all the hype surrounding most fighters is gone.
and yes, i have been watching since pride days.

ufc was extremely exciting these past few years (especially during covid) because everyone wanted to know who the best fighters were.

since 2018, we've had so many fights between top fighters and we roughly know who is left standing.
in my opinion, there are 4 hyped fighters left:

- islam makhachev (maybe arman tsarukyan)
- shavkat rakhmonov (maybe leon edwards)
- alex pereira (maybe magomed ankalaev)
- jon jones (maybe tom aspinall)

list of hype that died:

- khabib retired
- mcgregor is basically retired / washed up / exposed by khabib
- tony ferguson is absolutely washed up / should retire
- dustin porier and justin gaethje exposed by charles oliveira
- charles oliveira exposed by islam makhachev
- alexander volkanovski exposed by islam makhachev
- sergei pavlovich exposed by tom aspinall
- ciryl gane exposed by jon jones
- stipe miocic is basically retired / old / exposed by ngannou
- ngannou left ufc / approaching 40
- jiri prochazka exposed by alex pereira
- israel adesanya basically retired / exposed by alex pereira
- jan blachowicz exposed by old glover texeira and alex pereira
- magomed ankalaev keeps breaking mma rules and fighting dirty
- sean strickland exposed by alex pereira
- khamzat chimaev exposed by 12-days-notice usman
- usman exposed by leon edwards... twice
- aljamain sterling and petr yan exposed by sean o'malley
- sean o'malley is a mcgregor copycat
- no one cares about 125 lb flyweights

change my mind please (or don't if you agree)

Sorry, but I can't help but laugh. I have been around for 20 years and every year the same thread is made multiple times
UFC is dying!
The justification is always around star power. Yet Every generation when an old star leaves a new one replaces them. It has happened consistently.

Hey I was watching before UFC 1 even happened, when Ken Shamrock was fighting and Rutten and those guys, so I've seen it all, there are always periods in the sport when its great and then not so good.. Its true there is a lack of stars but it could change again in a few years because thats how sports are, not just MMA but sports in general

i only included hype trains since roughly 2018. why?

because as gsp famously said, "skill level in sport always increases over time"

2018 is recent enough to see the average skill level of mma increase substantially (compared to early 2000s/2010s) due to knowledge, fight styles, etc.

if i listed every hype train since ufc 1, it would be an entire chapter in a book
i can't say i agree with that. it was true until perhaps the early 2010's, but since then, it's just been different variations of the same skills. gsp himself is kind of a model of the modern "complete" fighter. i believe he'd champ today, along with most of the fighters from this 2011 photo:

i don't really see the mma landscape since 2018 treading any new ground. kinda the opposite really. we've seen quite a few "specialist" find success (though sometimes aided by favorable matchmaking), but mostly fighters have been relying on the same skills they've been using for the last 10-15 years, in varying proportions.

i've heard some people say that the people in the photo above "killed" their divisions by winning too often, because it became too predictable. i feel like it's the opposite. these days, without any long-reigning "invincible" champs, it's less interesting, because it's less meaningful when they lose. like who really is going to be surprised when leon loses at this rate? nobody. he's just another guy. if he defends 8 more times, then different story, because people will constantly be hyping up "the guy who can finally beat leon."

maybe if these "hype trains" started living up to the hype, people would pay attention more.

Guy has A point before fighters weere few words fighters but impactfull words these day they talk alot and only thing they expose is how zfupid and annoying they are and who would hype that

Load of horse shite, exposed exposed exposed, go watch boxing man if you want 25-0 fighters never competing .

“Only hype guys” include dudes who have been in the UFC for like a couple years, then clearly it’s possible via fluidity and time for more “only hype guys “ .

You don't need to be undefeated to have hype. Ultimately, hype is generated from promoting the fighters. Unfortunately, the UFC only cares about promoting the brand name. It takes someone like McGregor to become bigger than the brand, which is extremely rare.

There was a time when there was actual genuine hype behind the fighters and it had nothing to do with being undefeated. Not surprisingly, it was also when the UFC actually put money into getting people interested about the fighters, as opposed to having some random homeless dude film fighters on his phone and creating a bunch of low-cost generic videos that no one with a brain gives a flying fuck about.

Also, Pride FC did it properly.

Honestly, in a way I agree with you.

There are not many exciting fighters.

Agree with your short-list, but would remove Magomed Ankalaev from that list. Nothing he does is "exciting"

That said, totally disagree about the Flyweights — Pantoja, Moreno, Royval are all exciting fighters.
Hate to admit it, but Sugar-Shane O'Malley has become an exciting fighter.
So is Ilia Topuria.

The rest are average palookas, including Sean Strickland, Dricus Duplessis, Costa etc.

The UFC is for casuals now. Any hardcore fans from the Pride days are no longer appreciated and are an afterthought.
Its why titleshots are given to the loudest doucebags that “sell tickets” instead of those who deserve it and is precisely why I won’t buy anymore PPV’s.The UFC is becoming the WWE more and more and it’s embarrassing.
Oh, and it’s #1 sponsor is a blatant advertisement for chicks with dicks; something the average Sherdogger is far too happy about.

Anything that moves to ESPN dies a slow death. They are a plague for sports that don't feature woke tards.
