Opinion What does a real hero look like?

The whole idea if "heroes" is ridiculous. You guys are like children. I can understand having people you admire, look up to, appreciate, praise, ect. But heroes are for comic books.

People are people. Sometimes they do admirable things, other times they do shameful things. Most people do both. Trying to create heroes out of people is no different than creating gods out of people. Its silly.

Jason Dahl and Leroy Homer

United Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11.

Perhaps there were other courageous individuals on board who helped.

Whatever happened on that flight was ultimate heroism.

For anyone wondering, that's Walter Payton, the man who was so great for the community that the NFL named a community service award after him.

Shout out to Warrick Dunn too, another NFL guy who has been doing great charity work for decades now. I remember it started off as him giving people houses, and now it's expanded quite a bit.

He's built homes for 173 families.

Multiple Church groups, and random groups of volunteers are already hard at work cleaning up after the nationwide riots. They are cleaning the streets, clearing all the broken glass, and they are helping to clean stores that were looted. I'm sure they are making an insurmountable hole feel a little less hopeless for a lot of people.

There seems to be thousands of people helping. I just picked a random selection from the first few articles I saw:

You might want to read the definition of the word.

Corrie Saunders
On 22 September 2012, Corrie Sanders was fatally shot in an armed robbery at a restaurant in Brits, South Africa, where a function was being held for his nephew's 21st birthday. Sanders was taken to a hospital in Pretoria, where he died in the early hours of 23 September 2012 of his wounds.[8] Sanders' widow, Suzette Sanders, said Corrie died a hero, using his body to protect his daughter from oncoming bullets.[9]

Sanders had been near the entrance of the restaurant talking to his daughter Marinique and a cousin when three robbers entered firing their guns, striking Sanders in the stomach and arm as he moved in front of his daughter to protect her. Sanders was already bleeding from his wounds when he pulled her to the ground and told her to pretend she was dead.[10]

On 27 September 2012, following a tip-off, North West police arrested three men in the Oukasie informal settlement near Brits charging them with the murder of Sanders. All three are citizens of Zimbabwe.[10] At the first location, two suspects were apprehended and police recovered a cellular phone, vehicle key, purse and cash stolen during the robbery. Police then went to a second address and a third suspect was arrested, and recovered a handbag stolen in the robbery.[11] The trial was initially postponed until August 2013 as investigators attempted to locate the gun used in the crime based on the fourth suspect involved, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence in Zimbabwe for killing a police officer.[12]

Corrie Sanders was a legend. Most dangerous pudgy golfer in history. One of the fastest and most powerful heavyweights of all time.

Dr. John Cheng, 52, was the lone person killed in the mass shooting at the Geneva Presbyterian Church, where a Taiwanese church held services, in Laguna Woods, California. Five others were wounded by gunfire -- and if not for Cheng's efforts, the bloodshed could have been worse.

During the reception, a 68-year-old man identified as David Chou entered and began shooting at people, the sheriff said.

Cheng launched into action and tackled the man, allowing other church members to jointly disarm and detain him, the sheriff said. The pastor, Billy Chang, struck the gunman with a chair, and others hogtied the man with an extension cord and took at least two handguns from him, officials said.

"That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism in interfering or intervening to stop the suspect," Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said.
Cheng's decision to charge the suspect caused the firearm to jam, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said.

"If that event had not occurred, in other words, if the gun had not jammed, that suspect, Mr. Chou, he was ready to kill everybody in that church," he said. The shooter had already chained the doors shut blocking escape.

Cheng was the first to rush into action. He broke the bystander effect. He gave his life, so that it would be the only one taken. The shooter had two guns, a duffle bag full of ammo, another bag with molotov cocktails, and had chained the doors shut so that the ~40 people inside would not be able to run away.

True hero.
