how about that scene where the purple hair chick goes lightspeed into a "dreadnaught" and blows up the whole bad guy fleet.

so wait, you're telling me all the rebels ever had to do was autopilot one of their larger ships into the direction of the original deathstar? no need for a dangerous assault mission to shoot a rocket into some exposed vent?

Luke had more training than rey. And the battle of yaven wasnt his first time in an x wing. Its years between anh and esb. Obi wan was helping him along the way. He got his ass kicked by a wampa within the forst 10 minutes of empire. He was vulnerable and had to focus extra hard on gettng a lightsaber thats just out of reach. Rey in the tfa not only grabs a light saber from 50 yards away she fucking reads kylos mind and fucking uses jedi mind tricks. Far grom the same progression luke took. Shes OP and bland.

Maybe Rey is more powerful than Luke?

Luke was also weak when he tried to pull that light saber. And it was burried in Ice

And this was before he had any training... Obi Wan didn't really teach him much. Yoda was the one who helped him

By the end of the movie and after a week of training with Yoda he was putting up a fight with Anakin. (Who Kylo looks up to and strives to be). It's pretty obvious Kylo isn' nearly as strong

Merry Christmas everyone!

My point was luke is vulnerable at times. Thus i feel as though he can die. He makes progressions through out the series. His weaknesses makes him far more interesting. Rey is just perfect and OP. there isnt any thing interesting about her. Shes just there to out do kylo so there isnt any drama when they clash. If shes stronger than both why not give a good reason as to why that is? Having a natural gift is fine. But learning to harness it isnt something someone like her could know without training. This pretty much rewrites the whole force user rules. Why bother even seeking out luke and asking him for help? Rey has it all covered and needs nothing explained to her or learn anything. Its weak as fuck if ask me. It has nothing to do with her being a woman. I can see fast reflexes and what not. But sjes on high level shit already. And luke having to try extra hard to pick up his sabre in the wampa caveb re-enforces how hard it is to get proficient in the force. He didnt match vader in empire. Vader was playing with him. Its know that vader didnt want to kill luke, he wanted to turn him. Luke wad using raw talent and his very limited knowledfe of the force and it wasnt enough. Nope not rey though. Shes just fucking neo.

I think TFA f**ked up this trilogy in the first place.

How we go from the end of episode 6 with the empire destroyed and the alliance victorious ... to episode 7, where the First Order being EVEN MORE powerful than they ever were ... was a joke ...

JJ Abrams wanted to retell the SAME story ... He should have moved in another direction and told a new story in the first place.

People keep arguing over these nitpicks. They're just missing the forest for the trees. The problem isn't the consistency with the training of Luke, Kylo and Rey. The problem is the plot is fucking stupid and the tonal inconsistencies are so off-putting they ruin immersion. Either Rian Johnson is an idiot or this film was killed in the editing room. It truly is a mess.

SO much this.

Rey has no room for growth ... she is already the strongest character EVER. So boring and bland. Gynoworshipping Disney. If I was a woman or a feminist, I would find it patronising that she is so strong.

She is going to see Luke for training ... lol, what the f**k can he teach her??? She is already far stronger than he ever was.

You'll have to inform me, what canonical points did he fuck up?

Are you talking again about the characterization of Luke? Or use of the Force?
The characterization of Luke is my biggest problem. I don’t mind new Force powers. I mean, Leia survived in space, but whatever. I’m more concerned with the fact that Rey is really good using force powers with virtually no training. The whole point of the Jedi and Sith is to train force users. To learn how to use it requires knowledge and practice. But now Rey can just do these things with no training? It doesn’t make sense. To be fair, Abrams did this too albeit to a lesser extent.

Pretty much. Abrams left him with that potential though. But since shes already so versed in the force. It just makes the rest of the characters feel like theyre just going through the motions. We already know sjes going to wreck shit for the FO. Not that they arent full of incompetent officers that make it easy to get wrecked. The other major problem with this new trilogy, is the lack of a legitimate villian/s. They jave disarmed all of the potential threats. The fact that the resistance is in the situation they are in only makes me feel that they are far more incompetent than the FO. fuck this fucking movie.

Captain Phasma's armour is bullet proof .... so, why don't all Storm Troopers have this armour???

It would have actually made the storm troopers more menacing. IMO, this would have been a good direction to go in. Storm Troopers being more powerful, just like Agents in the Matrix.

Luke also had three years of informal training between ANH and TESB. Not to mention he is the son of the chosen one. Not like he was just kicking rocks in between movies.

I was thinking the same shit. At least the special forces troopers or some shit. They can build an entirre planet sized death beam. But armor that can actually stop a blaster is out of there reach. The only reason hed show that in the movie is to foreshadow her surviving the fire she fell into. Bit aftwr that weak ass battle why bring her back?

Actually Luke gets very little training in the first movie. Basically some fundamental stuff in the Falcon on the way to Alderaan & that's it. Wasn't on Degobah that long in the 2nd either tbh considering what full Jedi training would take. Pablo Hidalgo sayz about a month based on the time it took the Falcon to make its journey to Cloud City (same time Luke was training)

Rey didn't do all that much with the force outside of moving physical objects. That was a product of necessity that fine tuned her focus & there was no time for doubt... & so the force flowed through her & she was able to move all them rocks at once.

Think about when Luke was on Dagobah (Ep. 5) & Yoda had him focus on the rocks in like day 1 training... & he was hovering them successfully... including holding himself upside down on one hand with Yoda sitting on him... but then he lost his concentration & they all fell. Later he couldn't pull the X-wing out because his focus was tainted by doubt. So moving stuff with the force is done through concentrated focus & belief. (pure power of focused will) The necessity Rey had was her focus, & it had to be done or they would all die & so there was no room for doubt. She had to do it... & that's why it worked for her.

She became an elite staff fighter growing up through necessity & just straight up "need to survive" vibrancy... & now add to that the force awakening so strong in her... & it ads up that she can fight that well.
I see what you’re saying, but while Luke’s training was certainly truncated as well, he did receive some fundamental training from Obi Wan and more intensive training from Yoda. Rey, I don’t believe, has nearly that much training and her ability to use the force far exceeds Luke’s already. I mean, look at Kylo. He has formal training from both Luke and Snoke and he gets tooled by Rey on the reg.

Here's the thing about Hamill. . .

He says he told Rian Johnson early on, "I fundamentally disagree with every decision you've made for Luke."

Okay, asshole, so why the fuck did you make the movie? Is it just me, or does it seem like a bitch move to know ahead of time that you're unhappy with the direction the character is being taken, but then make the movie anyway, only to publicly complain about it after you've gotten paid?

To be fair, most of his quotes are snippets and taken somewhat out of context. In most every interview hes says "At first...." al the shit you see in the vids. Then ends with "But then I understood" or some such patter.

Even with that said, I couldnt imagine the backlash if he pulled out of Episode 8, assuming he even could given he signed a contract already.

Technically, Obi Wan was giving him training between ANH and Empire if you go into the canonical expanded universe in the Marvel comics line. Its actually a pretty neat device and the comics actually fill in some plot holes people probably didnt notice (Like, how Darth Vader knows Luke is his son). Still, though, if it's "movies only" if theyre strong enough with the force, less training is needed. But in fairness, Luke got some training. Rey never did.

This is one of my biggest gripes too. I've defended Rey since FA when people were calling her a Mary Sue. In FA you can actually see how she needs help from epople along the way. Finn tells her how to avoid the tie fighters, Finn is there to take up Rens time after shes been casually disposed of with a flick of the wrist, she gets captured, etc. So she isnt just wrecking shop everywhere.

She's strong, yeah. But it felt like Abrams had put in these seeds to help explain why she became so powerful so quickly, mostly with actually having Obi Wan Kenobi say "These are your first steps, Rey". Her parents werent important, imo. But now she's literally picking up a lightsaber and gutting elite praetorian guards. With zero training. Yeah. Now she's a Mary Sue. But I feel like Johnson did that, not Abrams.

You see, I thought their central dilemma was that they were being threatened with imminent destruction by the First Order.

I appreciate the additional world-building.

Why NOT care about them? I did.
A common thing that's been said in this thread is that it's not WHAT happened, it's HOW it happened.
Yes, the central dilemma was being threatened with destruction from the First Order ~~but that's a very broad statement. The first order could have threatened them with hugs or rainbows. For the vehicle of this threat to be "we have 6 hours of gas left" is fucking absurd. That is just a terrible plot considering we're in a movie with light sabers, light speed warp travel and Wookies. "I don't have gas" is mind numbingly stupid to me.

The casino. I'm all for world building. The casino didn't do that. That was a nothing scene. We learmed that there are rich people that liked to gamble...wow. so new. The casino served no purpose to further the story. Rose falls in love with Finn during this adventure because. .what? They shared a jail cell together for a few hours? Finn and Rose's purpose for being there was to get a hacker.
Instead, they get arrested for PARKING in the wrong spot, they then were ready to leave the planet WITHOUT what they came for...it was the random hacker who ended up saving them...for reasons unknown.

Why would you care about any of the characters? What do you know of them to care? I don't care about them because i know nothing about them.
Who is Finn? Why is he so infatuated with Rey? Who is Rey? Ah...just the daughter of a drunkard couple. Who is Ren? What does he want? Who is Snoke? Is this all that Luke is now? We had 3 movies with him as our hero. ..now he's just an old asshole drinking sea walrus milk? Even when the movie starts to do some character development, it then instantly kills the mood with a stupid joke.
"My sister died for the rebellion. .im sad......"20 seconds later" im gonna taze u, bro because ure tryin to hop outta here"
The character development, story, and tone made it impossible for me to give a shit about any of these people.
I don't know if you watch The walking Dead, but i had a similar feeling watching this movie. I didn't give a shit about any of these people

Dude is the worst villain ever - Rey murks him, he runs away to write his feelings in his diary will listening to some screaming emo music.
