Zookeeper Gabe's Animal Thread V7.0

Amazing.

i would guess you would have to see a child reach the age of about 7 or so before they might figure out how to bind those together if just left to figure it out.

I know some might argue its more 'monkey see, monkey do' then cognition, but at some point that had to be 'figured out' before it could be 'passed on'.

haha.

i always wonder if the meat of vultures is so putrid that nothing wants to eat them? Do they have any natural predators?

I mean, you can see this Jackal's bellies full and therefore its ok walking away, but predators like that have no issue returning to feast off a carcass for days even as its going rancid. So why just let the vultures strip it to the bone, ...seems counterproductive. Why not rush in and kill a few of them, making the rest disperse and too scared to come back? You see vultures doing the same around lion and hyena kills as if no predator will touch them.

When I saw that gif I was amazed myself. Bird brain my ass, eh?

I do enjoy Flowerhorns and other hybrids, but parrots are just too far. They can't even close their mouths. They dying, tattooing and fin slicing in the Asian fish culture is pretty sickening. The newest trend is "bat rays". They slice up sting rays, and give them weird shapes. Some even try to pass them off as new species or varients from breeding

I don't like the look of flower heads but I have no issues with them since they don't have the health issues. I don't have an issue with Glo fish either.
I'm surprised those rays lived long enough for their wounds to close, they're usually a pretty touchy animal.
I lost my sw tank a couple years ago and my LFS closed so I'm probably done with the aquarium hobby sadly. I still keep up on the new captive bred species.
If you ever get a chance to see Matt Pedersen (the lightning maroon guy) speak, do it. His presentation on captive bred animals is amazing and he's a great guy. I spent 45 minutes talking to him about some issues I was having with my clown fish breeding and he helped out tremendously. You could tell he was really passionate about fish breeding and was willing to spread his knowledge to other people to further the hobby.
I still love coral porn.

Amazing to watch that and I’m super glad it ended the way it did. I was hoping the guy didn’t get tagged, King cobra like that would be a pretty awful bite. Luckily they can’t strike up and that one was relatively small but dude had huge fucking balls

Edit: whenever I hear of some fucking pussy killing a small harmless snake or even a rattlesnake I remember there are people like this out in the world.

Ya, They like to say the snake charmer is hypnotizing the snake but I think snakes are simply not naturally hostile to humans. Sure they go into a defensive posture to initially say 'go away' or 'don't step on me', but once you are in their sphere, maintain calm and show you are not being aggressive, I think most snakes (save a few species) lose their aggression and many are willing to be handled.

but I did have a reaction to one thing you said which was...

"...relatively small..."

@MikeMcMann king cobras can raise a third of their body off of the ground and a big one is about 15’-18’. so they can literally bite you in the face from the ground.

The batmans are not carved up.. a stingray would not survive that treatment (i own several) especially not at a young age..

It is however a trait that i think they shouldn't breed as the stingrays are at a serious disadvantage when competing for food etc..

My arowana just moved to a bigger tank.. godspeed old guy.. been with me since 2011..
