Social 17 year old kid from my home town killed himself because he was getting sextorted on social media

Basically what happened is that somebody posed as a hot girl on Instagram and manipulated him into exchanging nude pictures. Once the scammers got the pictures they asked for $300 in exchange for them not spreading the pics all over social media. He paid them, but then they asked for $1000. He couldn't pay them that much so he offed himself.

I went to high school with his Dad. He was a good kid from a nice family. Athlete, good grades, never in trouble, on his way to college for sports medicine, etc... The FBI are involved now and the story is starting to get a bit of national attention. The family is allowing the media to use their late son's name and make the story public in order to spread awareness for this sort of thing. For those of you with kids please talk to them about this, as it may end up saving their life.

RIP

So sad to lose anyone that young.

Reminds me of that Black Mirror episode. Quite simply never share anything on the internet that you don't want spread.

The "sextortionists" don't care. They live in India. They're probably laughing about it seeing it on the news while they "sextort" thousands of other people around the globe.

Teach your kids to either

A) not send nudes

B) be prepared to have your nudes potentially leaked no matter who you are sending them to

It's truly sad he felt like that was his only way out. I wonder how bad would it really have been to have them leaked? So what? It's you nude. Big deal. I wish he'd talked to someone about it. :(

I think under the circumstances it would've blown over quickly. Since he was underage that would technically be considered Porn so they probably would have been taken down quickly if they were ever posted at all.

Great words of wisdom here. I wish the same manners would be applied to social media that are applied to real life. I was always taught that it is rude to bring up politics or religion in social settings especially if there is alcohol being served. Unless you are somehow involved in a campaign you should keep your fucking opinions off of your social media pages.

The only social media I use is Facebook (and Sherdog if that counts) and that's only for messenger. I stopped making public posts on social media several years ago. The whole thing kind of weirds me out. I used to mess around on Myspace and Facebook, mostly for funny dirtball humor, but once the whole thing started creating another ego for people I stopped.

I am sorry this happened this was horrible to read.

Sad story and all, but what do you really tell a kid in this era? It should be common sense not to send intimate pictures over the net to somebody you've never actually met. Sadly, the internet has caused people to lose sight of reality. It's not just kids, either. Lonely old dudes are losing their life savings to scammers who pose as hot chicks from halfway around the world, with promises that they just need a few more thousand dollars to get their green card and come marry them n' shit, and they fuckin' send it to them.

The internet came along and collectively lowered the world's IQ.
When you have kids, children you as a parent should also know with whom your children are socializing with.

read a harrowing thing on 4chan of all places
it's a nightmare world for kids

Poorly disguised left bashing / right circle jerking post is obvious.

Should be murder charges if caught.
Unfortunately, Michigan doesn't have a felony murder statute. And even if they did, extortion would only be a felony if the perp threatened physical harm and not just public embarrassment.

Poor kid. Must've been hung like a hamster.

I'll see myself out.

Given how common it is for young people to send each other nudes now I’m surprised the stigma amongst peers hasn’t significantly softened.

RIP sorry to hear it.
My daughter is 12 and her friend in her class shot himself in the head a few months ago. Kid was super depressed about covid and thought it would never go away. Couldn't deal with it anymore I guess.

These things are very hard to deal with. It's been very tough for our daughter. Thanks God the governor removed mask mandates 2 weeks after.
Damn, that’s some sad shit. Covid first hit a month or so after one of my brothers died and I remember at one point feeling pretty hopeless about everything but I’d never consider killing myself. Can’t imagine how much pain these people must be in.

People need to understand these are kids. Teachers acting like there was no light at the end of the tunnel. Telling kids this will be qoth us forever and so on.

Poor little guy missed out on life. If he only would have make it two more weeks.

We tell our daughter no matter how bad things get with kids ect. It's just a small snapshot in time. Things will improve and there's so much in life to see and enjoy. There's downs but there's more ups and life is amazing and so if seeing the world.

Yeah, never choose a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Terrible . I have an 17yr old son and 18yr daughter. It is definitely tougher mentally for them do to social media. I always worry about them thinking that all social media is real life, when infact it's a lie most of the time.

I hope they throw the book at these sick people.
Hope they go after them too. But I bet the people responsible don’t live in the USA and will make prosecuting them hard or impossible
Hate to say this will go nowhere.
My kids are 6 and 8, so I’m a few years away from this nonsense. Not looking forward to it at all

This. A 17 year old (guy for that matter) should have enough common sense not to send nudes if you are afraid of them getting leaked.

I dunno they got that girl that kept telling her ex to go kill himself. So there's a little hope.
