In fictional universes, shit always goes wrong.

But if I had to choose, I'd be a Jedi in the Star Wars prequel era. I'd just ignore the bullshit about not ever getting laid, and use my mind tricks to the fullest.

I really like the universe set up by Iain Banks in his Culture series of novels.
Its a post-scarcity science fiction setting with extreme technology levels.
its more interesting than the run of the mill because the whole universe has a lunatic fringe where you can go seeking as much adventure as you want, or you can be totally hedonistic, or anything in between.
