Exactly. Things were so bad in Germany economically at the time the Hitler was able to rise and stay in power, near willingly by the people. His giant red flags were largely ignored because of his successes.
Trump got into office because he swayed the working class the democrats ignored and anyone else tired of identity politics. I don't know how much he's impacted his blue collar base, but free speech advocates behind him seem to be going strong still. I would have voted for him on that alone.
His support amongst minorities should have set alarm bells off, but the regressives on the left were so far they're own ass they only made things worse. As violent/racist ANTIFA//BLM tactics escalated, and slanderous misinformation against Trump in the media grew (there's plenty of legit stuff to go after), the more entrenched the opposition became.
The #notyourshield campaign garnered a fair amount of support among minorities and women. I'm sure many of them supported Trump, or at least voted against Hillary. It was a small but interesting counter against the virtue signalers we can examine.
