It keeps them from being sliced open quickly, just compare to bare knuckle fighting.

"Ngannou would KO AJ in MMA". I mean, try to actually read that out loud without it sounding cringe.

Not to mention that's not even a given. If Ngannou tried to box against AJ in MMA he'd be ko'd the same. Not that it even matters. Both are different sports with different rulesets and if it was up to Ngannou he'd never fight MMA again because boxing pays more(although I'm not sure he'd be willing anymore, after realizing he could get CTE).
