Adapting TKD to MMA

Kyokushin would be a better building block than tkd IMO

OMG, that gif is awesome. I love the "take no prisoners" approach.

Have you seen the entire match?

That back kick looked like it hurt, but the gif stops there, so we don't know.

You guys should stop arguing, its all about what you get out of your martial art. Sure theres going to be "representatives" talking shit about other arts, hell i love bjj so much sometimes ill do that to. The original poster even stated only to do it awhile for 1 aspect, he never said "OMFG iF EVERYONE TRAINED TKD MMA WOULD BE RULED BY TKDERS" so calm your dicks.

The roundhouse defintely made contact and even though it was blocked I am willing to bet you that he still felt it somewhat.. And that backkick looked like it was getting through pretty cleanly.

So unless you were actually the guy receiving the kick then please don't post things like this. You don't know " how much damage " those kicks did and neither do I. It may not have ko'd him but you can't really judge how much damge is done simply by watching a 5 second clip. For fucks sake you can't even see the guys reaction after the back kick landed so how do you know that it did no damage!?

Pride has just signed the Cage Rage champion Zelg Galesic, so we'll get some more insight in TKD in MMA.

Zelg Galesic was, if I'm not mistaken, the ITF TKD world champion before crossing over into MMA. He's known for aggressive and technical standup, and lightning-fast kicks. He's been compared to Mirko, and they trained together on at least on occasion (Zelg is also from Croatia).

I've seen some of his fights, and he's the real deal. There is certainly kickboxing influence in his standup nowadays, but he still looks like a TKD guy mainly, at least to me.

Sounds like he'll be fun to watch.

I trained TKD from when I was 6 until I was about 14. I don't think it helps too much. But it did help alot with flexability. Adapting it to MMA is not too hard. You got your low kicks and your high kicks. Also your flexibility will help with rubber guard, if your into that.

What kind of kicks does Zelg mostly throw?

I think I saw only part of one of his fights on Youtube at Cage Rage against a British grappler, where he threw soem roundhouse kicks.

When a guy has his hands covering up like that it is because he is afraid to be on the receiving end of the kick.

;)

Zelg is definitely a hybrid fighter. He even submits people. But he definitely has a TKD background.

If you watch carefully he even throws stuff like sidekicks. As a matter of fact I think in one of his fights (the fight where he wins by armbar) the guy decided to take him down *after* he ate a sidekick.

You have to understand that the guy taking him down was a standup specialist. After eating a bit of Zelg's barrage (including that kick) he seemed to think, "I don't want to stand with this guy..."

Wait a second, do you have a bigger photo of that magazine cover, Aaron?

I could swear that it says: Zelg Galesic: Taekwondo works in MMA.

If he really said that in an intervies, as a Cage Rage champion fighting in Pride, the haters will bite their dicks off.

EDIT: Few people know that he still trains TKD and gives TKD seminars. He holds a 4th degree black belt and is a former world champion.

But yeah, it's useless.

But Kyun has trained in the art for about a year when he was a kid and he said it was useless. Surely he couldn't be wrong!

yea but he still hasnt replied to me yet.. he told me that the only reason i would win was because of my size advantage.. and that he is better than me in every other possible aspect in fighting... even though he doesnt know how to grapple.. but i remember him saying he would beat my ass no matter what weight class i was in.. and im still waiting...

What, you accepted his challenge and he pussied out?

I would beg to differ. When your oponent is busy defending himself (as was shown in the gif) he is not attacking you and you are controlling the tempo of the fight. If you are in control this is a good thing. If your oponent is too busy on defense to attack this is also a good thing. Although I will agree that the ax kick missed, the roundhouse was blocked (but the kicks blocked like that add up and deliver a tremendous amount of wear on your elbows) and the gif doesn't show the end result of the last kick.

Internet tough guys are generally real life pussies.

EEG's heard some of the stories of when I was young and stupid and would confront people about their internet blather. The moment they're called on their bullshit and the possibility of saying the things they've written directly to you, face to face, they suddenly become real quiet or they become they nicest guys in the world.

It also helps to know a fight promoter. There was a time and Hook'n'Shoot was just getting off the ground where if you knew Ian or any of the HnS guys, they'd set up a legal fight for you. The mere idea of getting in the ring and spewing their shit would shut half these guys up.

Of course, that was waaaay back - when Oleg Taktorov was sleeping on couches of various fight teams and (true story!) Joe Silva was just another fight fan who talked to the right guys and suddenly became the UFC matchmaker.

Sorry...I'm a huge fan of the US Army and Marine Corp...definitely some of the most togther indiviuals I trained with when I was in (various joint US/Canada exercises)

The Allies were losing the War prior to US involvment. "You guys" should have been carrying a large load, it was YOUR countries that were being defended.
I never stated that the US wasalone in fighting Japan, but we DID do the bulk of the fighting.
South Korea would not exist without the direct involvement of US troops. I fail to see any "point" you are trying to make with your alluding to Chosin Resevoir??? korea was a bungled attempt at the UN trying to be useful. As a matter of FACT it was another fine example of the uselessness of the UN.
I should have stated the FIRST MODERN DEMOCRACY (even though the US is a Republic) since every other country at the time was ruled by some sort of dictatorship / monarchy.
